Environmental Asset Bank™ (EAB™)

Tracking Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Credits and Tradeable Renewable Energy Certificates

Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) has developed a marketing/accounting/tracking system that allows the tracking and sale of environmental attributes, with an initial focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) credits and Tradable Renewable Energy Certificates (TREC). The system is fully scalable to respond to market demands. Many of the existing systems for following attributes (such as exchanges or registries) suffer from the application of generalized data that ignores regional differences, have flaws in tracking and transparency, and lack of governmental oversight. Without a transparent accounting system, the validity of GHG and TREC attributes limit economic benefits that could otherwise be gained. Source information is available for all assets and all transactions are traceable back to the source asset.  ESI’s accounting/tracking system, an EAB™, addresses these issues through a focus on transparency, analytical and regulatory oversight capabilities, and the incorporation of data developed within each localized area (county, region, province, etc).

Environmental Asset Bank(EAB)™ - A New Model for Transparency and Verification

Under ESI’s system verification of GHG credits and TRECs is performed under nationally and internationally accepted standards through approved third party verifiers, to remove the opportunity for bias and to ensure transparency.  Reporting of the credits occurs through a scientifically supportable methodology that takes into account the regional nature of the data to support qualified credits.  Regionalizing data to the state and county levels removes much of the inconsistency plaguing many of the nationally established programs.

Environmental Asset Bank (EAB)™ - Creating a Larger, More Visible Marketplace

Benefits to GHG Credit and TREC Providers

  • Increased exposure, providing a larger marketplace to ensure fair market value is received for GHG credits and TRECs.
  • Reduced liability for providers by creating a pool of GHG credits to buffer against unanticipated reductions due to natural disasters or accounting errors.
  • Multiple platforms for listing GHG credits and TRECs
  • Pooled transactions allow smaller GHG credit and TREC providers to compete in the wholesale market.
  • Individual transactions allow larger providers to negotiate the best prices for their attributes.

Benefits to GHG Credit and TREC Purchasers

  • Provides the opportunity for the bundling of attributes; i.e., carbon credits with TRECs, providing a less expensive alternative to the product similarly provided by solar PV (i.e., carbon offset and TREC).
  • Provides two options for purchasing GHG credits and TRECs, pooled attributes with transactions coordinated by the county or individual transactions which allow for independent negotiation.
  • Provides a fully transparent system in which all providers are listed, allowing the purchaser to acquire the most cost effective credits meeting their specific need.
